Garbage truck dumps burning load on UW-Madison parking lot

The driver of a garbage truck stopped at the 7-11 on State Street Monday when a bystander told him smoke was rising from the truck’s cargo area, the Madison Fire Department said.The driver dumped the burning load onto a nearby UW-Madison parking lot in the 400 block of North Lake Street, where firefighters responded about 11:45 a.m.

Hyperloop is the name of a potential transport system, with the idea of shooting people in pods through a tube at speeds of over 700 mph. But for Hyperloop, he invited over 100 teams from around the world to a competition to present their ideas on how to make Hyperloop work. Well, a team from UW-Madison made the cut.

UW-Madison slates community discussion on changing campus climate for minority students

Chancellor Rebecca Blank is inviting members of the community to talk with her Monday about needed changes to the climate for minority students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Blank, along with UW-Madison Police Chief Susan Riseling, chief diversity officer Patrick Sims and director of community relations Everett Mitchell, will host a discussion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Urban League of Greater Madison, 2222 S. #TheRealUW art ‘happening’ set for Friday at Chazen Museum

A first of its kind multi-media presentation inspired by #TheRealUW will take place Friday at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Chazen Museum of Art. They said they’ve watched with growing concern the response of campus leaders to racially charged incidents and believe the incidents should be handled much differently.

#TheRealUW: A social media movement is forcing UW-Madison to confront its race problems

Stories of racist incidents on campus have been shared using the Twitter hashtag #TheRealUW for much of the past month … #TheRealUW has allowed students of color to vent their anger and frustration about incidents of racism on campus. It has been exhausting to read and draining to live, they said. #TheRealUW has pushed race incidents into the public sphere, past the bounds of confidentiality or denial that typically protect targets and transgressors alike. Nobody now can claim that they have not heard the stories.

WiscWind sends 15 students to compete in national energy competition

A team of students from University of Wisconsin is headed to New Orleans to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition next month with their innovative wind turbine design.

The Department of Energy hosts competitions on a biannual basis, and this is the first year a team from UW was selected to compete, Scott Williams, research and education coordinator for the Wisconsin Energy Institute, said.

The recent terrorist attacks in Belgium and France have caused UW to reevaluate its travel guidelines and put some of its safety precautions into action. It also caused the university to evaluate the safety of these European study abroad locations.

I’m certainly happy for the graduates, as well as the students who’ve just completed a year of outstanding education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. More than 520 faculty and staff members and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin at Madison have signed an open letter that says the university police department went “well beyond the call of duty” on Thursday afternoon when officers entered a campus auditorium during an Afro-American-studies class and arrested a senior, Denzel J. McDonald, on 11 counts of graffiti. In the letter, the signers said they would “refuse to be silent” and they called for an end of “anti-black racism on campus.”

UW-Madison students involved in hate incident issue apology

A Native American healing ceremony for sexual assault victims was cut short when students yelled mocking war cry sounds from their dorms in Dejope Hall. UW-Madison to award rare posthumous graduate degree in May

Officials at the University of Wisconsin-Madison plan to award a graduate student who died last year a rare posthumous degree. The State Journal reports 30-year-old Craig Schuff died in October. Schuff had already earned a master’s degree in nuclear engineering and was preparing to defend his thesis to earn a doctorate in electrical engineering.

State Street to get 15,000-square-foot Under Armour store

One of the few remaining empty parcels on State Street is being filled and in a big way. A 5,000-square-foot building is under construction on what had been a small vacant lot in the 600 block of State Street between City Bar and Urban Outfitters. The building is being constructed by M&A CP Towers, owner of The Towers, a student apartment building at North Frances and State streets, and will be occupied by an Under Armour Brand House.
