Two teams will compete for top honors and cash prizes at the Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting and food expo Saturday through Monday in New Orleans.

Toxic algae blooms have shown up in Lake Mendota near UW-Madison’s Memorial Union and the Hoofers Sailing Club pier, according to the university. The university issued a warning to use caution along the shore and not swim at night when the blooms can’t be seen.

In late April, the CBS program ?60 Minutes? aired an extraordinary report titled ?Saving the Children,? about Sir Nicholas Winton, a 104-year-old (now 105 ? his birthday was May 19) Englishman who in 1939 helped 669 children, mostly Jews, escape Nazi persecution in Czechoslovakia through a program called Kindertransports. Renata Laxova was one of those kids. Laxova, 82, is an emeritus professor of genetics at UW-Madison.

Noted: At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a pioneer in the bait bike movement, the police department saw a 40 percent drop in reported bike thefts on campus in 2008, its first year using the tactic. The police there also use social media, but mainly to put out the word about the bait bikes, not to shame the perpetrators by posting their photographs, said Marc Lovicott, a spokesman for the department. But he sounded impressed by the tactic. ?Interesting ? we haven?t gone that far,? he said, adding that they might.

Warrant: UW student posed as woman on Craigslist to extort sex

A UW-Madison student was arrested earlier this month after he allegedly posed as a woman seeking another woman for a relationship, then threatened to expose intimate details about a female student on the Internet unless she performed a sex act on him, according to search warrants.
