Biggest stories from the UW-Madison fall 2010 semester

Isthmus

In barely more than a week, the bustling UW-Madison campus will be reduced to a ghost town as the first half of the school year ends and students head home for winter break. As usual, the university has seen its fair share of controversy and excitement, but there are some events that stand out from the rest.

Q&A with Z! Haukeness: Fighting for racial justice, one action at a time

Capital Times

You may not be familiar with Groundwork Madison or Operation Welcome Home, local grass-roots groups working for racial justice, but you probably heard about the ruckus last spring when Take Back the Land Madison placed a family in a townhouse left vacant after a foreclosure.

Z! Haukeness was one of the band of local activists who worked in support of the high-profile action, which dovetails with his efforts at Groundwork, a white, anti-racist collective; and Welcome Home, a community of homeless people and their allies. Haukeness, 29, is a native of tiny, homogenous Strum, Wis., who came to UW-Madison for its Afro-American Studies program and never returned home.

Biddy?s Badger Partnership may not be good for every-bucky

Badger Herald

Like so many other issues, Chancellor Martin?s new Badger Partnership proposal all boils down to one thing: Money. Or, rather, a lack thereof. Over the past 10 years, the amount of UW Madison?s budget coming from the state has declined at least 10 percentage points. That translates to millions of dollars. Now throw in multiple years of economic woes and the overwhelming election of state government officials who do not place higher education funding high on their priority list and you have the perfect context for administrative turmoil and uncertainty about the future. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: Tuition is going to increase. In an attempt purported to minimize that increase, Biddy has proposed the Badger Partnership, which would partially sever this great institution from the state. In almost any other context, this plan would have virtually no chance of being adopted. However, given the current environment, it could very well represent the best hope for the university.

Dean Showers: It’s no crime to sell your Rose Bowl tickets

Wisconsin State Journal

Oh the fun, and the self-righteousness, of being a university student! The Badger Herald has expressed outrage that some students are selling their Rose Bowl tickets at a profit under a system that does not violate UW rules against scalping. Herald editors went so far as to name some of the students who sold their tickets online. Greed aside, where?s the harm if students in need sell their tickets to those who can afford the price bump?

UW-Madison warns 60,000 of card data theft

Wisconsin State Journal

On Campus: Badger Herald expunges ‘worst people’ list

Wisconsin State Journal

The Badger Herald has removed the names of the UW-Madison students it dubbed “the worst” on campus. But today, the editors removed the list of names in the online article and replaced them with a note.

On Campus: ‘We’re Smelling Roses’ composer hopes it becomes Badgers Rose Bowl anthem

Wisconsin State Journal

Once we got official word that the Badgers were headed to the Rose Bowl — could an anthem be far behind? Anthony Lamarr Brown wrote, “We?re Smelling Roses,” to fill that role. The catchy rap number celebrates the Badgers victorious season and pokes fun at their opponents (“We?re smelling roses/We treat the other teams like a pocketful of posers”). Directed by “Teach Me How to Bucky”?s Logan Cascia, the music video features UW-Madison notables such as Chancellor Biddy Martin, UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone, and former Rose Bowl standout Ron Dayne. It also features lyricist JDante and singer LaVar Jovan Charleston.

Study shows more college students have more debt today

Wisconsin Public Radio

Recent college graduates have borrowed at a much higher rate than their counterparts did more than a decade ago, a trend also happening at one of the state?s major universities.

Susan Fischer is the Director of Financial Aid for the UW-Madison. She says one reason for the uptick is that since 1996, the government has simply provided more opportunities for students to borrow.

On Campus: Badger Herald expunges ‘worst people’ list

Wisconsin State Journal

The Badger Herald has removed the names of the UW-Madison students it dubbed “the worst” on campus. Lest you forget, the student newspaper published a list of about three dozen students who purchased Rose Bowl tickets, then tried to sell them for a profit online. Editor-in-chief Kevin Bargnes subtly noted that there is a “special place in Hell” for those students. But today, the editors removed the list of names in the online article and replaced them with a note.

The ?gospel? truth about University Gospel Choir

Badger Herald

Some people have been raised with gospel music as a significant part of their lives. Others were not introduced to the style until ?Sister Act? took the screen in the ?90s ? their experience with the soulful genre continuing to develop in the new millennium with 2005?s so-so film ?The Gospel? (Rob Hardy), or even Christina Aguilera?s track ?Makes Me Wanna Pray? on Back to Basics. Regardless of background, the University Gospel Choir in Madison is one fun, safe space for anyone on campus who possesses the singular, internal spark of musical joy.

Badgered buyers blasted for selling bowl tickets

The intersection of free enterprise and sports is often a relatively happy place. The buying and selling of tickets and merchandise — even at inflated prices — is seen as a necessary trade-off by most fans for the privilege of supporting and watching their favorite team or teams.

?Bad Badgers? brouhaha

Wisconsin Radio Network

Matt Rosenthal is on the worst people on campus list at the University of Wisconsin. It?s a list compiled by the Badger Herald newspaper, which printed names of 38 students selling their Rose Bowl tickets for a profit. ?They don?t know those 38 students motives, they don?t know anything,? said Rosenthal, adding that the fact that there was no name attached to the opinion piece ?was not cool.? Rosenthal said he put his tickets up for sale as a joke, and that there should be more tickets available for students.

The Worst People on Campus

Badger Herald

Update: The Badger Herald has removed the names of the individuals previously listed here. We don?t have the resources to continue fact-checking and adding the additional 200 or so names that have been submitted to the newspaper since the initial publication of ?The Worst People on Campus.? Because of this, it would be unfair to single out the three dozen people previously listed on this page.

Ticket distribution’s role in student scalping

WKOW-TV 27

MADISON — Suggestions for changing the system of distributing Rose Bowl tickets to UW students are being offered in the wake of widespread student scalping of the hard-to-get tickets. In an open letter to UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez, published in the campus newspaper The Badger Herald, UW graduate Tyler Bye proposed student tickets be picked up by the purchaser in Pasadena at the game venue to reduce the possibility of student scalping.

I am writing to you as an alumni and also a University of Wisconsin employee. I?ve been living in Madison for the last six years and have been a Badger fan for much longer. I held student season football tickets all four years of college and purchased a student season pack second-hand this year at an inflated price.

In defense of The Badger Herald (Bucky’s 5th Quarter)

On Sunday night, the University of Wisconsin-Madison put 5,800 student-tickets up for sale after the Wisconsin Badgers football team was invited to the Rose Bowl. Unsurprisingly, the Wisconsin students bought their allotment of bowl tickets in less than 20 minutes. Why wouldn?t they? The Badgers haven?t been to the Rose Bowl since 2000, and what half-frozen Wisconsinite wouldn?t want to take a mini-vacation to Pasadena during winter break?
