Importance of diversity training poses questions among faculty

“If there is diversity training, I would like to see who offers that diversity training and whether they have evaluated the kind of training they offer and whether that meets the desired outcome,” Brauer said. “Some kinds of diversity training make things worse, and actually deteriorates relationships between groups, so the blanket statement that UW needs more diversity training is one that I would not support or subscribe to.”

Student employment, a constant amid campus changes in operations

A lot has changed on campus this year due to the ongoing pandemic. The vast majority of classes are held virtually, residence halls have serious restrictions and there are little-to-no activities going on across campus. Student employment, though, is something that has remained a relative constant despite changes in specifics due to the nature of the pandemic.

UW asks students traveling for Thanksgiving to stay home until next semester

Over the course of two weeks, the university’s seven-day average positivity rate has more than doubled, including 100 students currently in quarantine or isolation, according to UHS Executive Director Jake Baggott. While UW increased its testing efforts, particularly in residence halls, Baggot called on students to help the university control the spread of the virus by adhering to social distancing protocols and restricting their activities.

UW-Madison officials share concerns about students traveling for Thanksgiving

The University of Wisconsin-Madison released a guideline Thursday morning to students on how to plan for Thanksgiving and beyond. The university says beginning November 30th in-person group instruction, including finals, will be fully remote. For students who wish to travel outside of the state, the university recommends that students stay home to complete the rest of the semester online.

“We’ve been expressing concern for several weeks now, along with local and state leaders, about the continuing spike in COVID-19 cases in Dane County and throughout Wisconsin,” Director of News and Media Relations Meredith McGlone said of the ongoing spike in campus cases. “It is unfortunately not surprising that we are also seeing an increase in positivity rates on campus, although our rates continue to be below the surrounding community.”

In a long-awaited and altogether tense meeting Wednesday night, the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Coalition has reached an agreement to meet with Chancellor Rebecca Blank at least twice a semester, with expectations to consult with other university administrators in between these meetings, in order to make progress on their demands.

UW-Madison will expand COVID-19 testing for Spring semester

The UW has partnered with Shield T3, a research initiative at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, aimed to advance COVID-19 testing efforts by developing a saliva-based PCR diagnostic test. This saliva-based test is estimated to provide an additional 10,000 tests per day as needed.

Voter turnout in UW student neighborhoods plunged for the 2020 election

Madison residents living in 13 wards with high concentrations of UW-Madison students cast 13,759 ballots at their local polling places, a 31 percent decrease in votes cast in those same districts during the 2016 presidential election. Votes from the five wards that encompass the university’s residence halls and Eagle Heights graduate student neighborhood totaled 2,526 — less than half of the 5,692 from four years ago.
