With a growing number of COVID-19 cases confirmed at UW Madison, Chancellor Rebecca Blank directed students to restrict their movements. We speak with the chair of the Associated Students of Madison about how students are coping with the pandemic and what they think of the university’s restart plan.

With the university starting the semester in a hybrid model of classes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, junior Max Serpe said the atmosphere wasn’t the same, but he was glad to finally be back on campus. “It had been six months since I walked into the business school, so it felt really good,” he said. “It’s a home and I’m happy to be home.”

Facing an increasing number of coronavirus cases among students and staff, University of Wisconsin will ask all undergraduate students to shelter in place for two weeks, beginning at of 5 pm today, according to an announcement from Chancellor Becky Blank.

“I keep telling myself that even if she is there for a few weeks, she’ll meet a few people to be in touch with throughout the semester,” says Elizabeth Rozen Silver, an office manager from Connecticut, whose daughter is going to University of Wisconsin-Madison. “At least that way, she may have some sort of community. I’m trying hard to be optimistic, but everyday the news from other colleges is getting harder. I am not going to sleep well for however long it lasts.”

Online panels Thursday to focus on anti-racist schools, virtual learning

The first event, which requires registration, is hosted by the UW-Madison School of Education’s Professional Learning and Community Education department, or PLACE, and Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The 3 to 5 p.m. discussion on anti-racism in schools is the first in a “Real Talk for Real Change” symposia series that will continue through the fall.

Tommy Thompson, Tavern League, restaurant leaders appeal to campus businesses to take precautions

The heads of the University of Wisconsin System, the Tavern League of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Restaurant Association sent an open letter to restaurant and bar owners Monday asking they take precautions to prevent COVID-19 spread as students start to return to campuses across the state.

UW System Interim President Tommy Thompson asked businesses to “help to encourage responsible behavior of our students,” alongside on-campus efforts to bring back a portion of some 170,000 students across 13 UW campuses.
