UW-Madison shuts down allegations of violence at protest

The university referenced allegations swirling on social media in a statement Tuesday. Radio and TV Host Dana Loesch reported claims in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, of someone having to be escorted into Hillel because supporters of Hamas were rallying outside the building, screaming threats and cutting an Israeli flag with scissors.

Man accused in brutal attack of UW student pleads not guilty

During his arraignment, Brandon Thompson had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf by the Dane Co. court to first-degree sexual assault, first degree reckless injury, and strangulation and suffocation. Thompson, who is being held on a $1,000,000 bond, is due to return to court on December 1 for a status conference hearing.

UWPD arrest at speaking event under review

UWPD explained its officers were providing support at speaking events on Tuesday at Library Mall when someone confronted a public speaker. Police stated that the suspect grabbed the speaker’s microphone card and wouldn’t let go of it, despite officers asking the person to cooperate and let go of the cord several times.

The RCC Sexual Violence Resource Center created a GoFundMe stating the student is still fighting for her life in the hospital. Organizer Dana Pellebon said the goal is to help the survivor and her family focus on healing rather than worrying about bills during her recovery. Pellebon said crime victim insurance could eventually cover some costs, but immediately after a sexual assault or rape, it is hard for the survivor to work while they try to recover from a traumatizing event.

During the hearing and in the complaint, prosecutors described the extent of the victim’s injuries. The complaint states, as of Thursday, she had been diagnosed with a Grade Two Traumatic Brain Injury and an MRI shows a brain bleed. Initially after the attack, the victim was placed in a medically induced coma and she still has trouble staying awake, the District Attorney’s Office continued.

UWPD Chief Kristen Roman condemned the attack during the news conference. “The violence perpetrated against this young woman Sunday morning was horrific and will not be tolerated,” Roman said. “This is not Madison, this is not UW-Madison, the safety of our Badger community will remain always our top priority we will work collaboratively with our city partners to prevent sexual violence.”

Following the New Student Convocation on Tuesday, UW-Madison Police Department Chief Kristen Roman and Lori Reesor, first vice chancellor for student affairs, spoke to reporters about the incident, and acknowledged the attack has rattled some students and families.

“Whenever a traumatic event like this happens, it also has great impact on people who have also experienced other traumatic events who are just anxious and fearful for themselves as well,” Reesor said.

The pier, which opened in 2013, has 330 feet of boardwalk and space to dock 17 boats to a series of floating piers. But the main pier structure, its walkway made of wood from the massaranduba tree, native to Central and South America, connects the floating docks to land and is anchored by 21 massive steel columns, each with a cone to prevent the columns from being crushed by lake ice.
