Noted: The University of Wisconsin System approved a budget request in August that asks lawmakers for an additional $42.5 million over two years to fund a range of new initiatives, including increased advising services and programs to connect students with state businesses. The System also stands to receive a $50 million increase over its current state funding if lawmakers restore $25 million that was lapsed from UW in the current fiscal year.

UWM expecting 3% drop in enrollment

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is projecting another 3% to 4% drop in enrollment and loss of millions of dollars in tuition revenue this fall, mainly because shifting demographics are producing smaller high school graduating classes in Wisconsin, Chancellor Mark Mone said.

Few understand what has caused the tuition boom, particularly at the public institutions that enroll roughly two-thirds of all students at four-year colleges. Many commenters, particularly in the popular press, focus on ballooning administrative budgets and extravagant student amenities. Those elements have played a role, to be sure, but by far the single biggest driver of rising tuitions for public colleges has been declining state funding for higher education.

Students would probably offer a multitude of answers if asked to name the best college in America. But U.S. News & World Report has delivered the same verdict for a string of Septembers. Princeton, the magazine just declared, is the top national university for the sixth straight year, Williams College the top liberal arts college for the 14th consecutive year, and the University of California at Berkeley the top public university for the 19th year in a row.

Noted: Tuition freeze. Republicans have frozen tuition for four years at University of Wisconsin schools, and Assembly Republicans say they’ll do it again for at least another year. Vos said the freeze could be extended for another year after that but added he would be open to an increase at that point that would match inflation. Assembly Republicans also said they would try to improve the transfer of credits from Wisconsin technical schools to UW schools and work to get more students degrees in four years.

What colleges are doing to be voter-friendly campuses

TEMPE, Ariz. – Students at Rollins College in Florida are designing custom “I voted” stickers for absentee voters. The University of Southern California has partnered with county officials to host voter registration events with prizes, games and free food. And at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the student government plans campuswide voter registration drives as well.
