Chris Rickert: Free college plan laudable but ideological

Far be it from me to diss two free years of college for every American student. And there are some decent reasons to support a recent proposal from a pair of UW-Madison faculty that would provide just that. The problem is that students could get their free rides only at public institutions, and only if the federal government agreed to start stiffing the private ones. That?s as much an ideological shot across the bow as a way to solve problems plaguing higher education.

Dozens of applicants denied admission to UW-Madison have contacted a non-profit legal group soliciting clients for a potential lawsuit because race is among the many factors the state flagship takes into account in its admissions decisions. The potential lawsuit is looming against a backdrop of a major U.S. Supreme Court decision Tuesday upholding Michigan’s ban on using race as a factor in college admissions.

UW-Madison spokesman John Lucas said that generally, adjunct positions at UW System schools require a bachelor?s degree. However, departments and deans can make exceptions, he said, and ?the university would most likely make that exception for non-degreed individuals with significant real-world accomplishments.? Given that UW System faculty and officials weren?t shy about signing the Walker recall petition, though, that still might be a tough nut for an aspiring Professor Walker to crack.

Pitzer will sell holdings in fossil fuel companies

Pitzer College announced Saturday that it would sell off all holdings in its endowment that are in fossil fuel comapnies. A number of small colleges have announced such moves, but Pitzer officials believe that their institution is the largest by far (in endowment size) to make such a move.

Foreign trade commissioners look to build business contacts on bus tour of Wisconsin

State economic development leaders on Thursday took 32 trade commissioners from 23 countries on a daylong bus tour designed to show Wisconsin makes more than beer and cheese. The tour included a stop at UW-Madison, for a presentation about the commercialization of university research discoveries and public-private partnerships over lunch at the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery.
