He was a founding faculty member of the Department of Oncology at McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He was regarded as a groundbreaker for many studies demonstrating cancerous tumor growth.

Charles R. Bentley, who in the 1950s led a team of scientists that measured the West Antarctic Ice Sheet for the first time, and who later explained the mechanics of the fast-moving ice streams that drain the sheet, died on Aug. 19 at his home in Oakland, Calif. He was 87.

Patricia worked as the Chair and Jan and Kathryn Ver Hagen Professor of Translation Research for UW-Madison Department of Cell and Regenerative Biology in the School of Medicine and Public Health. She founded the Keely Lab in the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research which explores how cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix result in invasive, metastatic carcinoma.

Lewis became the founder and director of the Environmental Awareness Center (EAC), part of the School of Natural Resources and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He had joint appointments with the Department of Landscape Architecture, Department of Urban & Regional Planning, and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Lewis also served as chair of the UW Landscape Architecture Department from 1964 to 1972 and taught undergraduate and graduate design courses.

Dorothy “Ellen” Allbeck Maurer
MADISON – Dorothy “Ellen” Allbeck Maurer died June 11, 2017, of congestive heart failure caused by chemo in 1995. In 1970, Ellen and Art moved to Madison to careers at the UW-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Art as a professor and Ellen as a publications editor in the Department of Agricultural Journalism. She specialized in working with “difficult” authors, drawing on her charm, patience and persistence as well as her editorial skills.

Harold F. Deutsch, 98, of Belleville, WI, passed away Monday morning (June 12, 2017) at Door County Medical Center. He became a professor at the U.W. Medical School and joined the Department of Physiological Chemistry (now Molecular Biology) where he worked for the remainder of his career.

He came to the UW-Madison in 1980, beginning a 23 year teaching career, retiring in 2003. In addition to teaching in the music composition program from freshman through doctoral students, he taught electronic music, directed the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, designed and built the school’s analog electronic music studio and its first digital electronic music studio, served as Director of Electronic Music, and chaired the Theory/Composition Area.

John J. Moskwa
MADISON – John J. Moskwa, age 67, of Madison, Wis., died on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at his home in Madison, from pancreatic cancer. He founded the Powertrain Control Research Laboratory, the UW College of Engineering’s Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) program, and received five U.S. patents and numerous industry and teaching awards, including being the only university professor ever to receive SAE International’s most prestigious award for automotive engineering innovation, the Edward N. Cole Award.

In 1947, she applied and got the position as Secretary to the Dean of Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin. She worked there 30 years until her retirement.

He joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin Biochemistry Department in 1956 and, except for an interval as professor of nutrition and food sciences at MIT, he spent the remainder of his career at Wisconsin.
Barnes, Donald E.
He remained in McFarland until 1995 as Elementary School Principal and taught graduate courses for several of the University of Wisconsin campuses. He also worked on many projects for the National Science Foundation and the Research and Development Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Pleger, Thomas Cary
A former Dean and CEO at UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, Tom became the eighth president at Lake Superior State University on July 1 2014. He received his doctoral degree in archaeology and anthropology at UW-Madison and spent 21 years teaching at various private and public institutions. Dr.Tom was a firm believer that everyone should be afforded access to a liberal arts education.

Ann served as advisor to UW undergraduates in political science; she served as both staff and board member of the Wisconsin Humanities Committee; she was a member and president of the board of the Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries and volunteered at many of the used book sales.

Dr. Baugh held several professional positions within the University of Wisconsin System, including Executive Director of the “Five-Year” Program (Madison), Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs/Assistant Professor (Oshkosh) and Senior Academic Planner, Academic Affairs (System Administration – 27 Campuses). He also served as the Executive Director for the Wisconsin Council of Criminal Justice (appointed by the Governor) prior to being appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1981 to serve as the Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Sischo, Merrill “Corky”
After graduating from UW-Stevens Point in 1963, Corky took a job at the Wisconsin Union in Madison, where he worked until his “first” retirement in 1995. During his tenure, Corky led the design and construction of the original Union South in 1970 and was the founder of the Badger Bash at Union South in 1972, a Badger Football institution to this day.

After graduation, she accepted an assistant professorship at the University of Wisconsin, where she taught, wrote, hosted local radio programs and, worked on her doctorate in Economics.

He spent a short time at Northwestern before landing a position at the University of Wisconsin – Madison as the administrative assistant to the school of music and accompanist for countless student concerts and recitals. He retired from the university in 1987.
