Noted: Schickel went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a journalism scholarship, and was editor of the Daily Cardinal and did some freelance work for The Milwaukee Journal. (In “Good Morning, Mr. Zip Zip Zip,” he says he lost his job as editor of the Cardinal because of his “anti-McCarthyism.”). Schickel left Wisconsin in 1956 for Los Angeles, where he worked as a freelance writer and reviewer.

Oliver Smithies had a habit of inventing ways to do the experiments he wanted to do, and crafted tools that are now used widely in biology. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007 for developing methods to genetically modify individual mammalian genes.

He received his Ph.D. in 1960, with a thesis on “Approaches to the Synthesis of the Alkaloid Veratramine.” Shortly thereafter, Howard began an academic career that spanned over 50 years at the University of Wisconsin.
