Dorothy Rice, a pioneering government economist and statistician whose research about the need of the aged for health insurance helped make the case for the passage of Medicare in 1965, died on Feb. 25 in Oakland, Calif. She was 94. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Edward Garvey was born on April 18, 1940, in Burlington, Wis., and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its law school. A job with a law firm in Minneapolis led to his work for the players’ union.

Noted: Schickel went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a journalism scholarship, and was editor of the Daily Cardinal and did some freelance work for The Milwaukee Journal. (In “Good Morning, Mr. Zip Zip Zip,” he says he lost his job as editor of the Cardinal because of his “anti-McCarthyism.”). Schickel left Wisconsin in 1956 for Los Angeles, where he worked as a freelance writer and reviewer.

Her position at the UW later turned to full-time employment with UW News & Public Affairs.

Oliver Smithies had a habit of inventing ways to do the experiments he wanted to do, and crafted tools that are now used widely in biology. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007 for developing methods to genetically modify individual mammalian genes.

For 46 years she supported graduate students and professors with their research as a medical technologist in the Departments of Medicine, Physiology and Anesthesiology at UW Madison. She was awarded Emeritus Status by then Chancellor Donna Shalala in September 1991.
