Dave Zweifel’s Madison: Professor Hugh Iltis helped save us from ourselves
It’s been several years since UW Botany professor Hugh Iltis graced my doorstep here at the paper.
Iltis, Hugh H. Ph.D.
Iltis spent nearly 40 years (1955 to 1993) as Botany professor and Director of the Herbarium at the UW-Madison, growing the herbarium to house over 1 million dried plant specimens. His taxonomic research focused on Capparidaceae and on Zea, working primarily in Mexico and the tropics. Iltis led numerous expeditions to many parts of the world to search for new plant species, travelling on mule or horseback when necessary.
Finhert, Virginia Ann
She worked for 35 years at UW-Madison in the Payroll and Benefits Department.
Gojmerac, Walter L.
In 1965, he was hired by UW-Madison, as a professor, and assumed responsibilities with the UW-Extension for educational programs in the area of insects affecting man and animals and beekeeping.
Schutz, Colleen Ann
Colleen began her career at the University of Wisconsin in the Department of Medical Physics 32 years ago when the Department Chair, Professor Herb Attix, hired her as Department Secretary. When Attix retired, Colleen continued working for the incoming Department Chair, Professor Paul DeLuca, until 1998. Professor DeLuca and Colleen were an unbreakable duo.
Redding, Sandra Kathleen “Sandy”
Sandy worked at OHMEDA and then the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the School of Pharmacy-Pharmaceutical Library.
Stucki, David Richard
After additional post graduate studies he worked for the UW-Madison in Student Statistics and Institutional Studies and was appointed the Director of Institutional Studies for the UW Center System.
Murray, Bruce H.
Professor Murray taught and mentored in the Department of Landscape Architecture, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), for 29 years. He retired in 1998. He served as Department Chairman from 1975-1978, and later held posts as Assistant Dean and interim Associate Dean of CALS.
Norris, Dale M. Jr.
He was Assistant Professor, University of Florida, Gainesville, 1956-1957; and accepted an Assistant Professorship, University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1958. He remained Professor Emeritus, UW-Madison, until his death.
Barnes, Bette Eileen (Brown)
She received her undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College in 1945 and her M.S. in Zoology from UW-Madison in 1947. Subsequent study and teaching in Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology marked her career. After 36 years at UW, she retired in 1991 as Senior Lecture Emerita from the Physiology Department.
Former UW-Madison professor Jack Fowler dies at age 91
John Francis “Jack” Fowler, professor emeritus of human oncology and medical physics at the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, died Dec. 1 at the age of 91. He taught at UW-Madison from 1988 to 1994 and again from 1999 to 2003.

Marilyn had been employed with the University of Wisconsin for 28 years before her retirement.
Mueller, Willard Fritz
After his Naval discharge, Fritz attended the University of Wisconsin, where he received B.S. and M.S. degrees. In 1955 Fritz received a Ph.D. degree in Economics and Law from Vanderbilt University. He became a faculty member at the University of California at Davis and Berkeley (1954-1957) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1957-1960) … In October 1969, Fritz received an appointment at the University of Wisconsin as William F. Vilas Research Professor in the departments of Agricultural Economics, Economics, and Law, where he played a leading role in creating a 15-University consortium to research the competitive performance of various industries.
Weible, Elwyn
His love of books led Elwyn to work at the UW Memorial Library from 1963 to 1999.
Cudlipp, William Samuel III
He was an esteemed Spanish professor first at the University of Richmond and from 1980 until his retirement in 2011 at the UW-Madison.
Al Brodax, Who Steered the Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ to the Screen, Dies at 90
Al Brodax, a television producer who delivered an enduring psychedelic classic when he turned the Beatles song “Yellow Submarine” into an animated film in 1968, died on Thursday in Danbury, Conn. He was 90. He was a UW alum.

ichard served as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1966-1971; an Assistant Clinical Professor from 1972-1978 and an Associate Clinical Professor from 1979-2010.

Becknell, Nancy
From 1973 to 1993 she taught horn at the University of Wisconsin School of Music, playing in both the Wisconsin Brass Quintet and the Wingra Woodwind Quintet during that time.

She worked as a receptionist at the University of Wisconsin Student Health.
Berezin, John Edward
From the 1960s until his retirement at the end of 2014 John worked at the UW Memorial Library, alongside the Bibliographers for Slavic, East European, and Central Asian Studies.
Teicher, Barry James
Barry then taught at UW-Madison, soon becoming the university’s oral historian. For more than 25 years, he researched the university’s history, selecting scores of leading scholars and administrators associated with the university for interviews. Barry’s extensive preparation resulted in a fascinating archive that exists orally in audio/videotape as well as in writing.
Marshall, John Richard M.D., Ph.D.
In 1970, he was hired at UW as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1978. John became residency director and directed the Anxiety Disorders Center in the Department of Psychiatry. He was chairman of the UW Department of Psychiatry from 1980 until 1989.
Weber, David R., M.D.
He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1962 and was an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison. He served one year as chief medical resident.
Voelker, Paul D.
MILWAUKEE – Paul D. Voelker, age 72, passed away on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at his home in Milwaukee, Wis. Paul was a tenured Professor of English in the University of Wisconsin system for more than 20 years.
Ruth Gruber, a Fearless Chronicler of the Jewish Struggle, Dies at 105
Ruth Gruber, a photojournalist and author who documented Stalin’s gulags, life in Nazi Germany and the plight of Jewish refugees intercepted by the British on the infamous passage of the Exodus to Palestine in 1947, died on Thursday at her home in Manhattan. She was 105. She was a UW alum.
Morin, Dornis C. “Bud” Jr.
In 1964, Bud earned his PhD from UW-Madison. Bud worked at the Synchrotron Radiation Center as an accelerator physicist for over 20 years until his retirement in 1993.

He returned to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to serve as professor of political science (1972-1977).
Bayens, Richard D.
He was a faculty member and an assistant librarian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, from 1956. He retired from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction-Division of Library Science.

Revered journalism professor celebrated as historian, teacher, friend

Lloyd Frank Bitzer died October 13, 2016 at the family home at age 85. From 1961 to 1994 he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin, specializing in the history and theory of rhetoric.

Schuster, Robert “Bob”
Schuster worked at the UW-Madison School of Medicine as an instructional specialist in the school’s pioneering distance education program. Subsequently, Bob transferred to the UW School of Nursing, where he developed the Simonds Center for Instruction and Research, assumed responsibility for computerizing the school, and served as a technology spokesman for the school. As a last project, he served the University in 2004 as a member of the design team for the Medical School’s new instructional center.

She was employed in the Work Study Department at UW-Madison for over 40 years.
Daniel Bernstine, president of Portland State University for 10 years, dies at age 69
Daniel O. Bernstine, who was president of Portland State University during its period of exponential growth in the early 2000s, died last week. He was 69. Bernstine was dean of the UW Law School in the 1990s.
Schmelzer, Robert W. “Bob”
Bob worked at the UW Madison Department of Chemistry as a machinist, retiring in 1984, and able to claim that a spring he built went up in the space shuttle.

Herrmann taught on the University of Wisconsin physical education faculty and served as Executive Secretary of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Verne worked for the University of Wisconsin Physical Plant for 40 years, until his retirement in 1992.

Noted: Born in 1940 in Milwaukee, Randa went to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin Law School. He served in the Army in Vietnam for two years, earning the Bronze Star.

Ron Vander Kelen dies at age 76
Ron Vander Kelen will forever be remembered for guiding the 1962 Wisconsin team to the brink of a national championship, only to see that dream fade with a 42-37 loss to USC in the ’63 Rose Bowl.
