Judy graduated from Bowling Green University in 1962 and married Dave McClain, former UW Head Football Coach. After Dave died, Judy became the executive director of the Henry Vilas Zoo Zoological Society. From there she became a fundraiser for the Madison Community Foundation and was involved in the development of the Fund for Women.

Carl Djerassi, 91, a Creator of the Birth Control Pill, Dies
Carl Djerassi, an eminent chemist who 63 years ago synthesized a hormone that changed the world by creating the key ingredient for the oral contraceptive known as “the pill,” died on Friday at his home in San Francisco. He was 91.
Peterson, Arthur Edwin
He joined the faculty of the Soil Science Department in 1950; he did agricultural extension work throughout the state and taught and researched in soil and water conservation. His early work in planting corn without plowing no till is now widely accepted. In 1960, he developed a unique statewide frost depth-reporting network in cooperation with cemetery officials, funeral directors and the State Crop Reporting Service to provide frost depths from November to April. This network still continues. Land application of bio-solids occupied most of his work in later years. For 30 years his Soil and Water Conservation course had a 120-mile aerial field trip to study the erosion and drainage problems associated with the glaciated and unglaciated areas of Wisconsin. He retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994.

Dave joined the UW in 1967 as a professor in the History of Science department, where he spent the rest of his career until he retired in 2001. He was devoted to his colleagues, department, and the UW, also teaching in the Integrated Liberal Studies program, and serving as director of the Institute for Research in the Humanities.

Noted: An obituary for Alec Johnson that appeared in the Dunn County Wis. News noted that Johnson, who was single, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011, and was an astrophysicist and mathematician by trade. He worked at a university in Belgium “on computer modeling to predict the timing and strength of the effect of solar flares on the northern lights, the power grid, computers and satellites,” the obituary said. He also worked with Ugandan farmers on sustainable farming and had a long history of helping the poor, the obituary reported.
