Donald S. Ermer died on Thursday morning, Dec. 13, 2007. When he joined the faculty at UW-Madison in 1971, he and his family welcomed the opportunity to return to their alma mater and native state. During the next years, as a member of the ME department at UW-Madison, he established strong and lasting ties with the Far East, especially Singapore. One of his major achievements was helping to establish and promote the State of Wisconsin Forward Award. Don retired in 2002 from the UW ME and IE departments, where he was Proctor and Gamble Professor in total quality.

Daniel Lee “Dano” Eckert, age 48, of Fitchburg, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007. He moved to Madison, in 1985, where he began a job at the University Hospital and clinics as a peer mentor for new spinal cord injury patients. He then went back to school to receive his master’s degree in rehabilitation psychology and continued to be employed at UWHC, as a rehabilitation counselor until August 2007, after 22 years of service.

Violet Elizabeth Nielsen, age 99, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007. She worked as a secretary in mechanical engineering at UW-Madison from 1926 until 1935. From 1952 until 1955, Violet worked in the Botany Department UW-Madison. From 1955 until 1962, she was the Department Secretary for the Geology Department. In 1962, she became the Department Secretary for the Scandinavian Department of UW-Madison, where she remained until her retirement in December 1976.

Engineer offered help to developing world
As Peter Bosscher sat in his home two weeks ago, painfully ceding the last of his life to kidney cancer, the engineer was thinking about sewage in the streets.
The 53-year-old UW-Madison professor was talking to two students planning sewer and water projects in El Salvador and Ecuador to prevent sickness and better villagers ‘ health. Bosscher, their mentor, was sure they needed one last computer file.

Samuel Leonard, pioneer in reproductive science, dies at 101 (AP)
Samuel Leonard, a Cornell University professor whose pioneering work in reproductive endocrinology in the 1930s led to development of the birth control pill, died Nov. 12 at his home, just four days before his 102nd birthday.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in 1927 and both his master’s (1929) and doctoral (1931) degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

John Anthony “Jack” Gray, died on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. From 1975 until 1990, Jack was the marketing specialist for the Recreation Resources Center for the University of Wisconsin – Extension, Madison.
Former Mayor Festge dies at 86
Otto Festge, 86, mayor of Madison for two terms in the 1960s, died Sunday. Born on a family farm near Cross Plains, Festge’s early career was in music. He majored in music at UW-Madison and served for a time as concertmaster for the UW Symphony Orchestra.

Jerry L. Maynard, age 65, of southern Door County, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, as result of a pulmonary embolism, following surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. His career as an electrician began immediately after high school with Knudson Electric in Mineral Point, Lubckes in Middleton and continued in a 35-year love affair with the UW-Madison campus, where he began as an electrical journeyman, retiring as supervisor of the Electric Shop.

Frederick H. Burkhardt, a Prominent Educator, Dies at 95
Frederick H. Burkhardt, a prominent educator who headed both the American Council of Learned Societies and Bennington College and also helped put the open-admissions policy into effect at the City University of New York, died on Sept. 23 at his home in Bennington, Vt. He was 95.
Mr. Burkhardt began his career teaching in the philosophy department at the University of Wisconsin in 1937.

55-Year-Old Madison Man Dies In Triathlon At Devil’s Lake
BARABOO, Wis. — A 55-year-old Madison man died during the weekend while competing in the swimming portion of a triathlon at Devil’s Lake State Park.
The man was identified as Dr. Daniel Eimermann, a psychiatrist who practiced in Madison, according to park officials.
Eimermann had a private practice at Psychiatric Services and served on the volunteer clinical faculty as a clinical assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

Jeffrey Miller was a retired security officer from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has a 22-year-old daughter and a 26-year-old son, she said.

UW-Madison Senior Dies In Crash In Africa
MADISON, Wis. — A University of Wisconsin-Madison senior participating in a study-abroad program in South Africa was killed in a vehicle crash on July 1 during a guided tour in Botswana.
Andrea Sperka, of West Allis, had completed her spring semester-aboard program and was traveling with a friend to the neighboring countries of Zambia and Botswana, according to the news release from UW-Madison.

Beard (pictured) unexpectedly passed away at his home on Friday, at the age of 46. He oversaw the day to day operations for the 23-sport, $80-million Wisconsin Athletic Program.
UW-Madison athletic administrator dead at 46 (AP)
MADISON, Wis. – Services have been scheduled Wednesday for Douglas Beard, a native New Englander who became one of the senior administrators of the University of Wisconsin-Madison athletic department.
Beard, 46, died at his Stoughton home Friday night, according to the death notice from Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral and Cremation Service. No cause was given.
Beard served as senior associate athletic director at UW-Madison, overseeing operations of the university’s 23 sports programs, and had been on the staff since 2001. Before that, he was with the UW-Stout from 1987-89 and UW-Milwaukee from 1989-2001.
