The difference between live and taped lectures

What is it about a great lecture that leads to learning? I attended the University of Wisconsin as an undergraduate between 1968 and 1972 where I experienced the power of two great lecturers. I attended the lectures of two very different history professors, Harvey Goldberg and George Mosse. I don?t remember much detail all these years later. But I do remember my intellectual and emotional response. They inspired me in three ways.
