With colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, Bhatia is trying to coax hepatocytes from so-called induced pluripotent stem cells–adult cells that can be reprogrammed into stem cells. Meanwhile, she’s working on a three-dimensional structure to hold and grow the nascent liver and trying to figure out how to attract blood vessels to it.
