For Public Colleges, Funding Cuts Hit Hard

Noted: The University of Wisconsin has endured budget cuts for 10 of the past 12 years, and those cuts have taken their toll, says Rebecca M. Blank, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which ranks 15th among public universities. The liberal-arts program in particular has endured faculty losses, and the school has been unable to invest in high-demand programs like computer science, engineering and nursing, she says.
