They are spread across eight states in the Midwest and East, enroll about 400,000 students, and collectively produce nearly 15 percent of all the graduating PhDs in the U.S. Their campuses sit on the shores of Wisconsin lakes, in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, amidst Illinois and Iowa farmland and in big and small cities in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota. Their architecture ranges from Gothic to modernist to utilitarian.
