MADISON, Wis. — For the second year in a row, drums echoed across Library Mall on the UW-Madison campus as Native American students danced and sang.They were singing and dancing to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, as proclaimed by the Madison City Council.
The date coincides with Columbus Day as a way for Native Americans to dispel myths about Christopher Columbus.”Today is a day for unity,” said student services coordinator Aaron Bird Bear. “For us to remember our ancestors, to remember our community and to honor one another and to continue to celebrate who we are and how our cultures continue to progress in society today.”
