Alan Turnquist and Erin Syth bought a tandem bicycle, quit their jobs and are paring down to eight articles of clothing each for a cycling trip that will take them from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America. They estimate they will be gone for about 18 months from the end of this month until January 2012. What they are doing is not unprecedented, they acknowledged during an interview on the UW-Madison campus, where they both had a couple weeks left at work: she in the administration and admissions office of the Law School, and he as an outreach coordinator with the UW-Madison Program on Agricultural Technology Studies.
