Lyle Knudson has decorated the walls inside his Marrowstone Island home with framed photographs of family, places, fruit trees (he is an arborist) and from his World War II service. There is a new memento now: a 2010 diploma from the University of Wisconsin?Madison, something special for the 94-year-old Wisconsin native. Knudson was called to duty as a naval aviator and missed two final exams in his senior year of 1941. The Navy would not wait. He left college early and never received credit for the two classes tied to those exams. That cost him a Wisconsin degree.
