Sierra Club sues UW over coal-fired power plant (AP)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Sierra Club sued the University of Wisconsin on Thursday, saying the school is failing to live up to its progressive tradition by illegally operating a 53-year-old power plant that is a major source of pollution.

With its lawsuit, the Sierra Club is targeting the school where its founder John Muir studied in the 1860s.

The San Francisco-based group claims the university violated the Clean Air Act by failing to install modern pollution controls when it performed several upgrades to keep the power plant built in 1954 in operation.
