MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin-Madison is under fire for where it has been dumping excess snow.
UW-Madison maintenance workers have brought the excess snow from campus to a marsh area just north of UW Hospital.
Some have recently complained that the debris, salt, sand and liter are contaminating Lake Mendota, WISC-TV reported.
“What we’ve looked at is that we’re avoiding direct pollution into the lake, because if we were to leave it on the streets, all that runoff would go directly into the storm sewers (and) directly into the lakes. And by putting it next to the marsh, the marsh acts like a filter,” said John Harrod, director of the UW Physical Plant.
