A modest effort to get young children ready for school could pay big educational dividends in future years – but the program’s success depends on you.

Ocean sediments may hold clues to extinction models

Invertebrates living on the Atlantic Ocean’s floor are helping scientists see the effects of dwindling global biological diversity.

These invertebrates show how local species extinction can alter the ocean’s ecology and decrease the volume of ocean life, said an international team of scientists that includes UW-Madison researchers, in the Nov. 12 issue of Science.

Alvarez’s dual role exceeds expectations

Alvarez is one of two in Division I athletics who manages both the head coaching and athletic director roles. The other is Watson Brown, the head football coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Brown took over the UAB coaching ranks in 1995 and then the athletic director position in 2002. According to UAB’s Senior Women’s Adminstrator and Associate Athletic Director Rosalind Ervin, Alvarez and Brown share a common trait that has allowed them to be successful early in their tenures.

Curtain set to rise on Chamberlin Hall

The construction around the newly renovated Chamberlin Hall is almost complete, meaning pedestrians will soon be able to use the whole of the sidewalk and not listen to a jackhammer as they walk.

UW-Madison made the decision to redo the current building instead of constructing a brand-new one because of its stunning structure, according to Al Fish, UW-Madison associate vice chancellor of facilities planning and management.

Gamoran new research head

The new director for the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, which is in the University of Wisconsin School of Education, was announced Friday.

UW professor of sociology and educational policy Adam Gamoran, who acted as interim director since August, will be responsible to lead an office that primarily identifies and seeks new research and grant opportunities.

State faces $1.6 billion shortfall

The state�s budget picture became clearer Friday with the release of economic figures from the state Department of Administration.

Wisconsin will face a $1.6 billion shortfall in the next fiscal biennium, half of the state�s $3.2 billion deficit from two years ago. The report credits strong economic growth and cost saving measures for the steep reduction in the deficit from the last biennium.

Police address their Halloween weekend tactics

At the Downtown Coordinating Committee meeting Thursday, Police Lt. Mary Shauf spoke to committee members regarding police action on Halloween weekend.

Shauf characterized Friday night of Halloween weekend as fairly trouble-free, the only problems being the torrential rain that pelted the city around midnight and a small confrontation with revelers occurring around 3 a.m.

Doyle blasts UW budget

The University of Wisconsin System�s 10 percent budget cut proposal is finding few friends at the state Capitol.

In a rare display of unity with Gov. Jim Doyle, Republicans blasted the plan Thursday for its lack of administrative cuts, saying students are being asked to pick up a disproportionately large tab for the system�s budget woes.

Upcoming UW System budget faces possible 10 percent cut

The UW System Board of Regents submitted plans Monday for a possible 10 percent cut in state funding for the UW System at Gov. Jim Doyle’s request.

In August, the Board of Regents voted unanimously for their 2005-’07 biennium budget request, but a 10 percent cut would injure what many are calling “the heart and soul” of the UW System-its faculty and quality of education.

Education by design

Many high school students know that if they want to major in business, medicine or education, UW-Madison is the right choice for college. But when considering fashion design, the Midwest does not immediately leap to mind.
Although UW-Madison is not widely publicized as a great place to learn about fashion, the Textile and Apparel Design program is not only one of the most comprehensive majors on campus, it’s also one of the most competitive.
Students must take a series of design courses before applying for the major. Once they can finally apply, only 15 students each are accepted for the textile focus and apparel concentration.
