Faced with declining levels of state funding and higher operating costs, universities across the country are increasing tuition to maintain sustainable operations. But another trend follows nationwide at colleges such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where some students rely on higher-interest private loans to fund their way through college because federal loans have not kept up with tuition hikes.

Richard Wood: Freeze UW tuition and housing costs

Wisconsin State Journal

As the parent of a student in UW System, I applaud the Legislature for auditing the System?s finances closely. We had a child in the System 10 years ago. The price of tuition and housing has doubled during that time, and additional fees have been added. I am sure many costs have increased over time, but doubled? Planning for a ?rainy day? is when you put 5 percent or 8 percent in the piggy bank, not several times that.

Suzanne Thorpe: Petition against UW cat cruelty has worldwide signatories

Capital Times

Dear Editor: After seeing PETA?s photos of cats being experimented on at UW-Madison, with steel coils in their heads and other extreme cruelty, I organized a petition to have these experiments stopped. So far it has been signed by people from all over the USA and the world, from Brazil and Australia to Greece and France. I hope others will support this petition and end this totally unacceptable torture of cats. Universities should be places of advancement and non-animal research.

Here lies Mifflin: an epitaph

Badger Herald

After four years at the University of Wisconsin and 18 years before that as a child of two American parents, I?ve heard the word ?privilege? with a steady degree of regularity. Its use starts as a warning like, ?Having your toy is a privilege, not a right,? and in an academic setting evolves something much more indicting; for example: ?You are the embodiment of white privilege.? The mere use of the word makes most people chafe and immediately begin to defend themselves from a perceived assault on their character or their own group identity.

Woody Knox: Wrong to label UW System surplus as a ‘slush fund’

Wisconsin State Journal

Everyone?s frustrated to find an account UW System set aside. I get it. But I take exception to calling it a “slush fund.”In the political world, “slush fund” implies it will be used to fund golf junkets to Hawaii or purchase political influence. But with the System, we know it will be used for the purposes intended — retaining, building, inspiring and investing only in the future of Wisconsin.

An extremely sincere thank you to UW’s underappreciated

Daily Cardinal

As a college student, I often get asked which class or which professor I enjoy most. While I?ve definitely had a number of great people influence my education and my world view, I?ve always held a special appreciation for a different group of individuals and this piece is dedicated to them. I extend my gratitude and appreciation to the janitorial, custodial and general maintenance staff that work in the student dormitories and campus buildings. You guys have always shown the most consistent kindness whenever I have interacted with you. Your responsiveness has been uncanny whenever I send in general maintenance requests. Your politeness has been thoroughly refreshing through numerous experiences I?ve had with you on campus.
