This Roy Lichtenstein-Themed Map Makes Pop Art of The World

Katie Kowalsky hadn’t always known she wanted to be a cartographer. In fact, she started out as an economics major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but somewhere along the line, stumbled onto cartography. Doing so was the “best mistake” she ever made, she writes at her blog. Kowalsky goes on to explain why cartography was such a perfect fit for her:

The Badger Herald student newspaper in the University of Wisconsin campus will go from printing twice a week to once a week. In a note from the editor published Thursday, Aliya Iftikhar said the change will “foster creativity among the staff by continuing to move away from the stagnant structure of daily print newspapers.”

Brett Favre to play flag football at Camp Randall Stadium

The former Green Bay Packer and NFL legend will play at Camp Randall Stadium this summer, the day after his induction ceremony into the Packers Hall of Fame … The all-star flag football game will be held July 19 and will feature several former teammates and other ex-NFL players … No ticket or other information is yet available, according to a statement from the UW Department of Athletics.

Madison-area law enforcement agencies grapple with body cameras

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department has already decided it’s moving ahead with the idea and now needs to determine policies … UW-Madison police decided to go forward with the devices after a couple years of considering them and trying one out. The department recently received a grant to purchase 10 more cameras and, if all goes well, it will pursue more. While the department waits for the cameras to arrive, it’s asking for input on how to use them.

Seniors go to college for free

A group of seniors are keeping their minds young by attending college courses. It’s all because of a law; it was present in the 1970s through the 90s, and it came back after high demand in the 21st century. The law passed again in the year 2000, and more than a decade later, hundreds of seniors are attending university classes for free.

UW police seek community input on use of body cams

After a number of high-profile, police-involved shootings across the country, many law enforcement agencies are equipping officers with body cameras, including UW-Madison police. The UW-Madison Police Department already ordered body cameras for officers, 10 to start, which will cover most on-duty patrol officers.

Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity terminated on UW-Madison campus

One of two Jewish fraternities at UW-Madison has been kicked out of campus life for repeated misconduct, the university announced Wednesday. Alpha Epsilon Pi is the second fraternity ousted by the university this semester after no terminations had occurred since 2006.

UW study shows link between Facebook posts, binge drinking

A study involving the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health says students who post more on social media about drinking before college actually did more binge drinking their freshman year. The study, which was conducted with the University of Washington, involved 338 incoming college freshmen between 18-19 years old, recruited during the summer at both campuses.

Giant puppets, stilt walkers ready to strut their stuff

In Mazomanie, stilt-walkers from the Wild Rumpus Circus rehearsed their high-altitude trot. Meanwhile, UW-Madison broadcast an invitation to any and all to don their zaniest regalia and join the promenade Saturday.

UW seeks input as it begins revising campuswide construction, maintenance plan

University of Wisconsin is seeking input over what the future of campus should look like as it begins to revise the Campus Master Plan, which will focus on spaces between campus buildings and areas that haven’t been developed. Quoted: “We know the most sustainable building is the one we don’t have to build,” said Gary Brown, director of campus planning and landscape architecture.

UW-Madison students from Nepal: ‘A few of us lost our houses’

“A few of us lost our houses.” Members of the Nepal Student Association at UW Madison are raising money and awareness for earthquake victims in Nepal. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed at least 4,000 people in their home country.  There are about 20 students and faculty members from Nepal on campus and more than 200 Nepali immigrants living in Madison

Group helps kids affected by a parent’s cancer

Though the disease can be a difficult battle for the person that’s diagnosed, it’s also a trying time for the kids. That’s why a group has stepped in and created Camp Kesem and they have a chapter here in Madison run by UW students. On Saturday a fundraiser was held to raise money to send kids to Camp Kesem for a week free of charge.

Dorm sexual assault suspect in custody, UWPD says

A 19-year-old was taken into custody Friday in connection with a reported sexual assault in a Madison dorm, police said. The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department said Friday afternoon that Nicholas H. Ralston, of Neenah, was arrested on tentative charges of third-degree sexual assault.
