High rise student housing OK’d

Despite concerns about tearing down five 19th century homes and blocking views of the Capitol, the city Plan Commission approved a 12-story student apartment tower at the corner of West Gorham and Broom streets.

The $14 million project from Karl Madsen and Mike Fisher of Great Dane Development is the latest in a series of high-rises near where West Gorham turns into University Avenue.

UW students compete during Innovation Days

UW lineman arrested, suspended from team

Freshman defensive lineman Gino Cruse was suspended from the University of Wisconsin football team this week after his arrest Sunday.

Cruse, 19, was jailed on charges of criminal damage to property and domestic disorderly conduct. In addition to the criminal charges, Cruse was issued municipal citations for possession of marijuana and underage drinking.

The seventh annual Kites on Ice Festival took flight this weekend on Lake Mendota in front of Memorial Union, with highlights like the extreme sport of “snow kiting.” Hundreds of Madison families participated in workshops, admired exhibits and watched kite performances. Pilots from around the world showcased their abilities for the largest crowd of any kite festival in the United States.

Students Disrupt Meeting While Regents Try to Discuss Professor

AURORA, Colo. � A student protest turned into a brawl here Thursday, shutting down a meeting of the University of Colorado board of regents after it agreed to investigate a professor who compared the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to Nazis.

Several dozen supporters of professor Ward L. Churchill repeatedly shouted down regents as they discussed whether the instructor had crossed the line of academic freedom.

Ads demean women, speaker says

“And today it’s far more extreme, far more ubiquitous and far more pornographic,” media critic Jean Kilbourne told a crowd of UW-Madison students Wednesday night during her Distinguished Lecture Series presentation at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

….The models portrayed in ads have a body type that only 5 percent of women have. They are genetically thin for the most part, but still often starve themselves, Kilbourne said.

“Attempting to achieve this ideal causes a lot of suffering,” she added.

Six women face a handful of citations after a UW student fell off their balcony. The incident happened January 21 on the 900 block of College Court.

An 18-year-old male fell off a balcony while at a house party hosted by the women. They were all between the ages of 19 and 20. He suffered head injuries and alcohol appears to be factor in the accident.

Six UW students fined for party

Six Madison students received big fines for alcohol violations after an investigation into a student’s fall from a downtown balcony.

The 18-year-old University of Wisconsin-Madison student fell from the balcony in the 900 block of College Court just before midnight on Jan. 21 and was taken to University Hospital with head injuries. Police said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Balcony Falls Spur House Party Summit

Two students have fallen from balconies since UW’s school year began. In response to two alcohol involved, balcony falls by UW students at house parties, a summit on the risks of uncontrolled house parties will take place February 22 at the Memorial Union.

Susan Crowley of UW Health Services leads the PACE project, which develops strategies to decrease student binge drinking. Crowley told 27 News the meeting will involve the drinking issue’s stakeholders: students, UW administrators, police officers, landlords and representatives of neighborhood associations.

On one level, campus reconstruction-the demolition of Van Hise, the reconstruction of Ogg and the development of Lakeshore-is positive. Van Hise is so dangerous it is cheaper to demolish than refurbish. Ogg is a reputably filthy tower riddled with tiny, garret-like rooms. Lakeshore needs some new pizzazz. In short, new buildings will make this campus both more attractive and safer.

Doug Moe: UW poker whiz reflects on win

JOHN STOLZMANN, the 23-year-old UW-Madison senior who won close to $1.5 million playing cards Thursday night in Mississippi, isn’t sure he’ll make a career of poker when he graduates in the spring.

“I’ll play poker for at least one year,” Stolzmann was saying Friday. “During that time I’ll also be applying to law schools.”

A UW-Madison philosophy student pulled off an upset victory in a major poker tournament Thursday night, becoming an instant millionaire. And they say liberal arts majors will never get rich. John Stolzmann, 23, of Sheboygan outplayed some big names in the poker world to win the Jack Binion World Poker Open in Tunica, Miss. His prize: $1.5 million and the right to advance to the World Poker Tour Championship in April.

U. of Mich Plaintiffs Awarded $672,000

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the University of Michigan to pay $672,000 in legal fees and costs to attorneys for students who sued the school over its use of affirmative action in undergraduate admissions policies. The university had maintained it wasn’t responsible for the legal bills. U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Duggan disagreed, but ruled that the $2.1 million originally sought by the attorneys was excessive. In June 2003, the Supreme Court upheld a general affirmative action policy at the University of Michigan law school but struck down the university’s undergraduate formula as too rigid because it awarded admission points based on race.

Iraq veteran at UW says it’s time to get out

…(23-year-old UW senior) Laura Naylor, who majors in kinesiology, still considers herself a patriot and wouldn’t trade her experience as a soldier if she could turn back the clock. Still, while in Iraq, she also grew disillusioned with the war.

The longer the United States stays in Iraq the larger the insurgency becomes, she said. The best strategy right now is to get out, she added.

UW poker player wins $1.5M

A 23-year-old UW-Madison philosophy student from Sheboygan is the poker world’s latest million dollar baby.

Thursday night, in Tunica, Miss., John Stolzmann won the Jack Binion World Poker Open, and $1,465,944, topping a strong field of much better-known players including Chau Giang of Las Vegas, who finished second.

Deputy Athletic Director Jamie Pollard told the Wisconsin State Journal preliminary budget estimates for 2005-’06 show ticket prices for the general public may bump up $2 to $4 per game. Ticket revenue supplies much of the Athletic Department’s budget.

In a contentious verdict, the Ohio State University administration allowed a campus Christian organization to bar homosexuals. The decision permitted the Christian Legal Society (CLS) chapter at OSU to deny admittance to two students who wanted to join the group last fall.

Frustrated students discuss tuition raise

A handful of UW-Madison students met in the Red Gym Wednesday night to discuss their concerns with continual tuition increases. Members from the MultiCultural Student Coalition and the Student Labor Action Coalition are trying to organize students to demand that the state do something about tuition costs, which are rising every two years.
