TABOR would be disastrous for UW

Last summer, the Wisconsin Legislature was mulling over a proposal for a Taxpayer Bill of Rights. TABOR is a Republican-led initiative intended to constrain state spending through the adoption of a constitutional amendment. TABOR stems from the aspiration for fewer and lower taxes, but it is a drastic proposal that spares no consideration for those reliant upon state services. The proposed TABOR would strip the UW System down to its bare bones and force UW-Madison to become a private university.

Beauty reigns effortlessly at dance concert

The UW Dance Program put on its annual Fall Faculty Concert at Lathrop Hall�s H�Doubler Performance Space Nov. 18-20. After weeks of rehearsal, hours of tech rehearsal and three nights of production, the show came off effortlessly. Works choreographed by faculty members Jin-Wen Yu and Li Chiao-Ping, and academic staff Marlene Skog, Maureen Janson, and Peggy Choy, were joined by guest artists-in-residence Allen and Karen Kaeja. Renowned modern dancers, choreographers and film-makers, the co-directors of Kaeja d�Dance were honored to be a part of this year�s concert. Spending the past two weeks in Madison, the experts of contact improvisation and partnering shared their knowledge of modern dance with students in the dance program. Additionally, Kaeja choreographed a piece performed by several UW dancers.

Student victim of sex assault

A 19-year-old University of Wisconsin female student was sexually assaulted just after midnight Nov. 21. The attack occurred on the 100 block of Langdon Street after the victim walked home alone from a downtown bar.

Curtain set to rise on Chamberlin Hall

4 arrested in anti-war protest near campus

In a rare display of unity with Gov. Jim Doyle, Republicans blasted the plan Thursday for its lack of administrative cuts, saying students are being asked to pick up a disproportionately large tab for the system�s budget woes.

WHAT A difference a year makes. It was just last fall that UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley was grimly releasing e-mails sent to the university by football fans from Ohio State and Purdue who had traveled to Madison and come away shaken by the experience….Wiley was concerned enough to go door to door personally in student areas, asking for help and restraint. It appears to have worked, at least judging by a column last week in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Last spring, the instructors of Environment, Textiles and Design course number 501 set out to accomplish what few college courses strive to achieve: education through community service.
Titled “Threads of Remembrances: Infant Bereavement,” ETD 501 was a joint effort between Meriter Hospital and the Textile and Apparel Design program of the UW Human Ecology department, aimed at utilizing the skills of UW-Madison students to help grieving parents better cope with the loss of their premature infant.

Upcoming UW System budget faces possible 10 percent cut

The UW System Board of Regents submitted plans Monday for a possible 10 percent cut in state funding for the UW System at Gov. Jim Doyle’s request.

In August, the Board of Regents voted unanimously for their 2005-’07 biennium budget request, but a 10 percent cut would injure what many are calling “the heart and soul” of the UW System-its faculty and quality of education.

Education by design

Many high school students know that if they want to major in business, medicine or education, UW-Madison is the right choice for college. But when considering fashion design, the Midwest does not immediately leap to mind.
Although UW-Madison is not widely publicized as a great place to learn about fashion, the Textile and Apparel Design program is not only one of the most comprehensive majors on campus, it’s also one of the most competitive.
Students must take a series of design courses before applying for the major. Once they can finally apply, only 15 students each are accepted for the textile focus and apparel concentration.

Budget cuts may slice enrollment

The University of Wisconsin System could face a $28 million budget cut next fall, triggering enrollment reductions of an estimated 1,650 full-time students. The cut would also mean the university could afford fewer staff members and would lose $14.6 in tuition revenue, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
