Russell A. Jones, age 83, died Sept. 27, 2005. He was the Director of Small Business and Outreach at the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Madison. He retired in 1984.

Carter Denniston, age 67, died on Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, 2005. He joined the Genetics faculty as Assistant Professor, becoming Associate Professor in 1975 and full Professor in 1981. He retired and made Emeritus Professor on Jan. 1, 2005.

Oscar Winning ‘Spartacus’ Art Director Dies at 97

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) – Prolific art director Alexander Golitzen, who won Oscars for “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Spartacus” and “To Kill a Mockingbird,” died Tuesday, July 26 at the age of 97.

He earned a degree in architecture at the University of Wisconsin, whereupon he moved to Los Angeles.

The Scientist magazine names Madison “hotspot” for biotechnology

Madison, Wis. – The June 20 issue of The Scientist, named Madison, “the Midwest’s low-key hotspot” for biotechnology. The publication reported that the city’s research facilities and open community make it one of the best climates for starting or continuing a biotech and life sciences company.

In 1947, Matt became the manager of the UW College of Agriculture Experimental Farms on campus, as well as the “Hill Farms” area. He received his M.S. degree during this time. In 1955, as the city of Madison was expanding westward, the University sold the “Hill Farms” area and purchased nine farms in the Arlington Prairie. Matt was instrumental in developing these farms into a world-renowned agricultural research station.

She worked as an instructional materials center coordinator at Belleville High School from 1968 until 1972. She then came to the University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System. Carol held many positions at the library including Head of Area Studies and Head of Original Cataloging, which she held from November 2000 until the time of her death. In addition to her work as a librarian, Carol also taught courses for the UW’s School of Library and Information Studies.

MEQUON – Matt Wittig was perseverance personified.

Just 11 months after a bicycle accident had him near death last spring, he was back on his bike enjoying the sport, the team camaraderie and the competition. But on May 7 at a Wisconsin Cup bicycle race in Muskego, he suffered another crash and sustained head injuries. He was only 20 years old when he died May 12.

John A. “Jack” Duffie, age 80, died on Saturday, April 23, 2005. In 1954 Jack joined the faculty at UW to found the Solar Energy Laboratory in the College of Engineering. He was its director until he retired as Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1988, and is recognized around the world as a pioneer in the solar energy field.

Milton Howard Miller

Dr. Milton Howard Miller, the longtime chairman of the department of psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center died Wednesday after a long illness in his home in San Pedro. He was 77.

Miller served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, where he became chairman of the department of psychiatry.

Colleagues and friends are also urged to attend a 3-D slide presentation of Hans’ work. This will take place immediately after the Pyle Center gathering at the home of Jim Pawley, 21 N. Prospect Avenue. Hans Ris was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1914, and died in Madison on Nov. 19, 2004, (obituary appeared on Nov. 23, 2004.) He is survived by his wife, Theron Ris; daughter, Anet Kelman-Ris; and his son, Christopher Ris.
