MADISON – Charlotte Monona Hamilton Nafziger, age 98, died peacefully on Friday, Apr. 1, 2005. Her partnership with her husband Ralph O. Nafziger in journalism circles was renowned at the UW during the 30s, later at the University of Minnesota, and then a second time at the UW when her husband returned in 1949 as director of the School of Journalism.

Arlie Max Mucks Jr. of Madison passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at the age of 84. He served as executive director of the Wisconsin Alumni Assocation from 1962 until 1989, then served as a special assistant to Chancellor Donna Shalala, and as a special consultant to the UW Athletic Department.

James H. “Jim” Adams, age 75, of Fort Atkinson, died on Monday, March 14, 2005. Following high school graduation, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years, where he was a member of the UW marching band.

Wilbur M. “Bill” Hanley, UW professor emeritus, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at age 96. In the spring of 1942, he became Director of Extension Teaching at the University of Wisconsin, with full responsibility for supervising all Extension sponsored University credit class work.
Emeritus Professor Ron Shaffer
Emeritus Professor Ron Shaffer passed away on Friday, March 4, 2005. He joined the faculty in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics with a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Extension in January 1972. He was the director of the Center for Community Economic Development from 1990-2000 and the director of the National Rural Economic Development Institute from 1990-1998. He retired from UW in October 2001

Jane C. Harper, age 83, died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. After Dr. Buchholtz’s lengthy illness and death in 1969, Jane completed a M.S. in child development and family relations at UW-Madison. She went on to a career as a family living specialist in the UW-Madison Extension division, producing programs for the state that were aimed at improving the quality of family life.

Paul F. King died on Nov. 27, 2004, at the age of 83. After returning to civilian life, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in economics. He took a position at the University Biotron in Madison as chief/technical engineer and worked there for 30 years until his retirement.

Joanne M. Doak (nee Schwarzmeier), age 55, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005. She was a founding member of the UW Women’s Hockey Club back when women “didn’t” play hockey.

Janet Lemke Chase, age 71, passed, away on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005. In 1968, Janet moved back to the Madison area and became a professor’s assistant for UW until her retirement in 1996.

Merle F. Bliss, age 82, of Beloit, died on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005. After 14 1/2 years, Merle was the oldest living liver transplant patient from UW-Madison.

Russell C. Riley, age 87, passed away on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005. He began his apprenticeship with Gisholt, from there he primarily worked for the University of Wisconsin Chemistry Department as an instrument machinist, retiring in 1987.

Sociology prof. dies of cancer
A UW-Madison sociology professor lost a battle with cancer Jan. 14.
Frederick H. Buttel taught rural sociology for almost 13 years. He retired in November and established the Frederick Buttel Fund, which gave money to the rural sociology department to use for a variety of purposes.

Jane I. Mills, age 89, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005. Jane worked as a house mother at a UW fraternity for many years.
Gary Lee Borman
Gary Lee Borman, age 72, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He graduated from UW-Madison with a B.S. and M.S. in math, an M.S. in engineering and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Gary was a full professor, retiring as a professor emeritus, and was involved with many research projects.

Irene Mary Newman, age 109, passed away on Friday, Jan. 14, 2005. She attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1917 with a B.A. degree, and from the U.W. Library School (now the School of Library and Information Studies) in 1918. She was the oldest living U.W. alumna for several years prior to her death.
Clarence Everett (Pat) Johnson
Clarence Everett (Pat) Johnson passed away January 14, 2005. Pat moved to Madison in 1965, where he earned a Ph.D. in food science. Pat joined the Department of Food Science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he directed outreach programs for the food industry.
Jacquelyn Hanson Hur
Jacquelyn Hanson Hur recently passed away after a short illness. Jacquie graduated Madison Central High School in 1941 and entered the University of Wisconsin School of Music. Following three required major recitals she was officially recognized by Professors Church and Johanson as a concert pianist. Jacquie was the fifth member of a select group of musicians qualified to play the University of Wisconsin Carillon Bell Tower on Bascom Hill.

Frederick H. Buttel, age 56, died on Jan. 14, 2005. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the UW-Madison, followed by a doctorate in sociology at UW-Madison. He joined the UW-Madison faculty nearly 13 years ago. He was a leading scholar in rural sociology who was devoted to four major areas of study including the sociology of agriculture, environmental sociology, technological change in agriculture, and national and global activism relating to environmental and agricultural policies.

Elizabeth “Liz” Sewell, age 91, died on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004. She was a teaching assistant in the sociology department during the 1960s. She was married to William H. “Bill” Sewell. Bill was a distinguished professor of sociology, as well as chancellor of the university from 1960 to 1961.
Arthur Barclay “Chappie” Chapman
Arthur Barclay “Chappie” Chapman, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.
Dr. Chapman was appointed to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1936, and became a Professor of Genetics at that institution in 1947.

Raymond E. Goldbin, age 68, passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005. Raymond retired from University Printing in 1994, after 20 years.
David Hottmann
David Hottmann passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005. He held degrees from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Illinois. He retired in 1998 from the UW-Madison School of Music after 32 years of teaching voice and vocal literature. He then became Professor Emeritus of music.
Pitot/Hubbard, Beth
Beth Pitot/Hubbard, 49, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004. After earning her M.S. in nursing administration from the School of Nursing in 1996, she taught at the school and served as a member of its alumni association board of directors from 1997-2002. Beth was a clinical nurse manager in the acute rehabilitation and family practice units at UW Hospital and Clinics until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2001. She then resigned from those positions and worked as a clinical nurse specialist in both units until six weeks before her death.

Ralph J. Oimoen, age 81, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004. He attended UW-Madison for a semester. He was also a former member of the UW-Madison Rowing Team in 1942.
Professor Muttaiya Sundaralingam
Professor Muttaiya and Indrani Sundaralingam, died together on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, as a result of the forces of nature. Professor Sundaralingam went on to hold academic positions at several prestigious institutions, University of Washington-Seattle, Harvard University, Case Western Reserve University and UW-Madison.

Joe Flad, who built a regional family business into an award- winning national architectural firm, died Sunday. He was 82.
Flad & Associates designed many area schools and churches, including the biochemistry building, Van Vleck Hall and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation Building.

Paul J. Cleary, age 76, of Madison and Green Valley, Ariz., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Tucson Medical Center.
He was the first male to enroll in the home economics department at UW-Madison, earning a B.S. in food administration and experimental foods in 1955. Starting at age 16 in the dish room, he spent the next 25 years in food service management at the Memorial Union, ending his service there as food director.

MADISON – Caroline Goss Thompson, founder and long-time director of the Occupational Therapy Program at UW-Madison, died on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the age of 95. She served as director of the Occupational Therapy Program for 31 years, from 1945 to 1976.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, 1609 University Ave., Madison.
Monroe, Margaret E.
MADISON – Margaret E. Monroe, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Attic Angel Place, Middleton. After eight years (1954-1963) on the faculty of the Graduate School of Library Service, Rutgers University, Professor Monroe moved to Madison to join the faculty of UW-Madison’s Library School. She was director of the Library School from 1963-1970.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at ATTIC ANGEL PLACE COMMUNITY ROOM, 8301 Old Sauk Road.

Roger Eischens, age 63, of Blue Mounds, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004. A yoga teacher for more than 25 years, he also taught physical education and coached athletics at Wayne State University, South Dakota State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
