Emeritus Professor Ron Shaffer passed away on Friday, March 4, 2005. He joined the faculty in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics with a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Extension in January 1972. He was the director of the Center for Community Economic Development from 1990-2000 and the director of the National Rural Economic Development Institute from 1990-1998. He retired from UW in October 2001

Jane C. Harper, age 83, died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. After Dr. Buchholtz’s lengthy illness and death in 1969, Jane completed a M.S. in child development and family relations at UW-Madison. She went on to a career as a family living specialist in the UW-Madison Extension division, producing programs for the state that were aimed at improving the quality of family life.

Frederick H. Buttel taught rural sociology for almost 13 years. He retired in November and established the Frederick Buttel Fund, which gave money to the rural sociology department to use for a variety of purposes.

Gary Lee Borman, age 72, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He graduated from UW-Madison with a B.S. and M.S. in math, an M.S. in engineering and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. Gary was a full professor, retiring as a professor emeritus, and was involved with many research projects.

Irene Mary Newman, age 109, passed away on Friday, Jan. 14, 2005. She attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1917 with a B.A. degree, and from the U.W. Library School (now the School of Library and Information Studies) in 1918. She was the oldest living U.W. alumna for several years prior to her death.

Following three required major recitals she was officially recognized by Professors Church and Johanson as a concert pianist. Jacquie was the fifth member of a select group of musicians qualified to play the University of Wisconsin Carillon Bell Tower on Bascom Hill.

Frederick H. Buttel, age 56, died on Jan. 14, 2005. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the UW-Madison, followed by a doctorate in sociology at UW-Madison. He joined the UW-Madison faculty nearly 13 years ago. He was a leading scholar in rural sociology who was devoted to four major areas of study including the sociology of agriculture, environmental sociology, technological change in agriculture, and national and global activism relating to environmental and agricultural policies.

Elizabeth “Liz” Sewell, age 91, died on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004. She was a teaching assistant in the sociology department during the 1960s. She was married to William H. “Bill” Sewell. Bill was a distinguished professor of sociology, as well as chancellor of the university from 1960 to 1961.

Arthur Barclay “Chappie” Chapman, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.

Dr. Chapman was appointed to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1936, and became a Professor of Genetics at that institution in 1947.

David Hottmann passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005. He held degrees from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Illinois. He retired in 1998 from the UW-Madison School of Music after 32 years of teaching voice and vocal literature. He then became Professor Emeritus of music.

Beth Pitot/Hubbard, 49, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004. After earning her M.S. in nursing administration from the School of Nursing in 1996, she taught at the school and served as a member of its alumni association board of directors from 1997-2002. Beth was a clinical nurse manager in the acute rehabilitation and family practice units at UW Hospital and Clinics until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2001. She then resigned from those positions and worked as a clinical nurse specialist in both units until six weeks before her death.

Professor Muttaiya and Indrani Sundaralingam, died together on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, as a result of the forces of nature. Professor Sundaralingam went on to hold academic positions at several prestigious institutions, University of Washington-Seattle, Harvard University, Case Western Reserve University and UW-Madison.

Joe Flad, who built a regional family business into an award- winning national architectural firm, died Sunday. He was 82.

Flad & Associates designed many area schools and churches, including the biochemistry building, Van Vleck Hall and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation Building.

Paul J. Cleary, age 76, of Madison and Green Valley, Ariz., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Tucson Medical Center.

He was the first male to enroll in the home economics department at UW-Madison, earning a B.S. in food administration and experimental foods in 1955. Starting at age 16 in the dish room, he spent the next 25 years in food service management at the Memorial Union, ending his service there as food director.

Thompson, Caroline Goss

MADISON – Caroline Goss Thompson, founder and long-time director of the Occupational Therapy Program at UW-Madison, died on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the age of 95. She served as director of the Occupational Therapy Program for 31 years, from 1945 to 1976.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, 1609 University Ave., Madison.

MADISON – Margaret E. Monroe, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at Attic Angel Place, Middleton. After eight years (1954-1963) on the faculty of the Graduate School of Library Service, Rutgers University, Professor Monroe moved to Madison to join the faculty of UW-Madison’s Library School. She was director of the Library School from 1963-1970.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at ATTIC ANGEL PLACE COMMUNITY ROOM, 8301 Old Sauk Road.

Roger Eischens, age 63, of Blue Mounds, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004. A yoga teacher for more than 25 years, he also taught physical education and coached athletics at Wayne State University, South Dakota State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Margaret Ward Orsini, age 88, died on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004. Joining the department of anatomy of the UW Medical School as an assistant professor in 1969, she was promoted to associate professor in 1971 and became a full professor in 1973.

Lawrence “Larry” Halle, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004. Larry attended law school while being a house fellow in the University of Wisconsin-Madison residence halls. Larry was offered an opportunity to supervise the university housing for married student veterans at the Badger Ordnance Works at Badger Village. When the federal government reclaimed the village in 1951, he returned to UW-Madison where a massive housing building program was about to begin. During the subsequent years, Larry enjoyed many positions within the university housing system including personnel training adviser and assistant director in charge of expansion program and construction.

UW volleyball: Fitzpatrick’s spirit resonates with Waite

It’s difficult to overlook Margie Fitzpatrick’s accomplishments as a volleyball player at the University of Wisconsin.

Fitzpatrick finished her career in 1987 ranked among the school’s top 10 in every hitting and blocking category, and set records for most aces in a career, season and match. It’s no wonder she was voted the Badgers’ most valuable player in her final two seasons.

Eleanore May Oimoen, age 86, of Sauk City, died on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004. After taking a civil service test, she became a clerk in the extension division of the U.W. Other promotions led to jobs in the agricultural journalism department and eventually as secretary in the President’s office, where she served with President E.B. Fred, President Conrad Elveljem, President Fred Harrington and President John Weaver. Due to a brain aneurysm, she retired early at age 64, having worked in the university system for 44 years.

Dean Baxter Mory

Dean Baxter Mory, age 91, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville. He attended the UW-Madison where he won letters for gymnastics and wrestling and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Physical Education. He taught Physical Education at Franklin and Nakoma Elementary Schools before becoming head gymnastics coach and assistant professor in the School of Education at UW-Madison (1949 to 1961).
