The foundation for much of what UW-Madison and the Universities of Wisconsin have become today was laid by Charles Van Hise.
President of UW-Madison from 1903 until his death in 1918, Van Hise is credited with creating the “Wisconsin Idea,” the concept that the state’s public university system should benefit every person in the state.
